“The Ring misseth, maybe, the heat of Sauron’s hand, which was black and yet burned like fire, and so Gil-galad was destroyed.”
I wonder if Mairon had any friends in Valinor. I mean, I imagine he was much the same person if a non-evil version. Still arrogant, still a perfectionist, still obsessed with order.
I kind of imagine him talking a lot with Eonwe. Because there was no one else. And Aule was his master, his strict father figure who loved him but was harsh and withheld compliments and was quick with corrections. Mairon couldn’t talk to him. And he and the others in the forge saw each other as rivals rather than friends. And besides, Mairon expected perfection in others just as much as himself and genuinely thought he was better than everyone. And that was never going to garner him many friends.
So there wasn’t anyone in his own area of work who he could talk to. I think Yavanna was maybe a bit of a mother figure, but she could never understand Mairon given their diametrically opposed interests.
Eonwe had nothing to do with the forge and he wasn’t a nature spirit. So he would maybe be someone Mairon could talk to. And as the highest ranking Maia, given his role as Manwe’s messenger, he was someone who could meet Mairon’s high standards and someone who Mairon could see as almost an equal. I see Eonwe as someone who wants to see the best in everyone. So as much as Mairon was maybe honest with him about his growing darkness, Eonwe refused to believe that Mairon would join Melkor until Mairon left Valinor. And even then, he believed that Mairon could change.
I wonder if, even after Mairon refused to return to Valinor, some part of Eonwe held out hope that he could have his friend back again.

Can anyone handle his cuteness? ~;w;~

How you know being a Silmarillion Tumblr fan has affected you: You’re watching Return of the King and you start to feel bad for Sauron as his tower collapses.
